In this article we are going to examine the topic “Can Food Affect Your Dreams:What You Eat Before Bed May Matter”
Many people are firm believers that certain foods and food generally can affect their dreams. Stories abound of foods such as cheese, spicy foods, sweets, and late-night meals having both positive and negative effects on people.
But is there any truth behind these beliefs?
Yes, food may affect dreams, but to know the extent and understand the connection between food and dreams we have to glean the research about this subject. This is because the whole issue about whether what we eat can affect our dreams may be more complicated than simply eating one particular food and having a nightmare.
A recent study suggests that food may affect sleep quality in several ways. The reason being that eating certain food and at certain times can sometimes affect the stomach, cause insomnia, and discomfort. And as we know, sleep and dreaming are proportionately connected, since a change in sleep quality may also change the way we remember or experience dreams.
A recent 2025 study of 1,082 people published in the Frontiers in Psychology shows that some of the people examined believed certain foods changed their dreams. The foods that topped this study for disturbing dreams were desserts and sweets, then followed closely by dairy products. The researchers also discovered that food intolerance, stomach problems, eating late, poor sleep or insomnia could be part of the discussion.
The paper also noted that of the 1,082 surveyed only about 5.5% of the participants said that food or eating late affected their dreams.
The participants reported that food could make dreams more vivid, disturbing, bizarre, or pleasant.
However, the research does not explicitly prove that eating sweets or dairy directly causes nightmares or affects dreams.
So the claims being bandied around that certain food has healing or magical effects as well as causing diseases should be taken with a grain of salt.
The science behind most of these foods is not that simple and studies are still ongoing to establish hard facts.
My advice is that you should be mindful of what you eat by studying the effects certain food has on you. If it's pleasant and agrees with your system, adopt it for you, if it causes a reaction, discard it. Know that we are all different with different body physiology.
Dreaming occurs and is clear during REM sleep, (rapid eye movement sleep). At this stage of REM sleep, brain activity becomes more active, and many people experience detailed stories, emotions, images, and strange events.
The kind of food or choice of food a person takes may not necessarily create a dream. But if your choice of food causes a disturbance in your system that affects your sleep, you may not experience dreaming at the REM stage.
Research has connected low sleep quality and waking up intermittently with disturbing dreams and nightmares.
That's why if your food intake affects your sleep it may sometimes affect dreams but not necessarily your dream content.
The time you take dinner may matter as well for some people, for others they may be fine.
From my experience with eating a large meal shortly before bedtime. I find that my digestive system struggles to digest the food as the digestive system is working extra hours while I am trying to sleep. And so I battled with constipation and heartburn which causes insomnia in me. And as you know when you can not sleep, you can't have dreams.
The ability of the body to digest foods at night gets slower. Eating very late just before bedtime may cause stomach upset, bloating, and poor sleep. It can also increase acid reflux because when people lie down stomach acid moves upward. Persons with IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) may have more gas, pain, or changes in bowel movements after large late meals. Although eating late may not cause weight gain as weight gain occurs from eating too many calories, over a long time. It's recommended to try and wait two or three hours after consuming a meal at night before lying down to sleep. (Windsor Center for Digestive Health. “Is It Bad to Eat Late at Night?” April 19, 2026. And because sleep quality can affect dreaming, this may be one way that food and dreams are connected.
As we glean from the research, food may affect our sleep quality which may in turn affect our dreams.
Also, any food that can cause stomach discomfiture, heartburn, or indigestion may lead to highly disturbing sleep. A paper from Windsor center for digestive health, agrees that eating a large meal late at night may lead to bloating and Acid reflux which can make it difficult for people to sleep after eating a late meal.
Since dreaming is closely linked to sleep, changes in sleep may also change how we experience or remember our dreams.
